Case Study of the Month
In the Spotlight is: Ruth Parle at Rotters
p
Rotters is a composting charity set up by liverpool residents in South Liverpool. Their aim is to reduce landfill in the local area as to directly have an impact on the climate and local environment by the reselling of high quality compost. Ruth is the education officer in Rotters, she delivers an education package to schools covering all stages, Infants, Primary and Secondary schools. The aim is to get schools onboard by reducing their landfill, through assemblies, workshops and collection. They will collect fruit and vegetable waste from all schools who participate.
p
The current project is an allotment project, which also consists working with a firestation in Speke. The firefighters cleared an area within their station to build an allotment. They built the beds for the plants and food, they also maintain the plants, such as watering them. It is part of their community engagement and helps the firefighters build relationships with the pupils. Middlefield primary school are part of this project and it helps the pupils to learn about growing and planting food with the aim of cooking the food at the school. There are currently 4 allotment projects taking place around Speke and Garston, with schools each having their own allotment to look after.
p
The reason Ruth works with schools is due to the influence it has on the local community. A primary school will produce up to 3 tonnes of waste, with 1 tonne of waste being food waste, according to current figures. From 1 tonne of food waste 21% of this is methane, therefore this programme is very good to be apart of as your waste will be collected and the compost can be re-used for your own food growing projects.
p
In September Ruth will be hosting a workshop with Faiths4Change on composting and recycling just for teachers. More information will be available soon, please keep checking the website for more information or contact Ruth.
